Letter from Principal Crystal Bielmeier

Thank you for your interest in supporting the students and families of Milwaukee Math and Science Academy. I would love to share more about our school and our students.

In the spring of 2021, MMSA moved to a new location in the Sherman Park area. Each year we have increased our enrollment to welcome new students. During the 2021-2022 school year, we had approximately 200 students, during the 2022-2023 school year, we have about 230 students and for the 2023-2024 school year, we expect to increase our enrollment to 250-260 students.

All of our students receive free breakfast and lunch each day. Our demographics are the following: 96% black/African American, 3% Hispanic, 1% white or students with multiple races/ethnicities identified. This year, about 16% of our students receive special education services. We also have a large population of students that have English as a Second Language (approximately 18%). The majority of these students have families from Somalia.

Ninety percent of our students are bus riders. Most students come from the east and north sides of the City of Milwaukee. We have many sports teams that compete in the MKE Recreation League. This year, our fall sports included: 1st-3rd grade co-ed football, 1st-8th grade dance/cheer, and middle school girls' basketball. Our winter sports include: 1st-3rd grade co-ed basketball, 4th/5th grade boys' basketball, 6th-8th grade boys' basketball, and 6th-8th grade co-ed volleyball. Spring will include: soccer, t-ball, and more basketball. For the 2023-2024 school year, we will also have an after-school partnership with the Boys & Girls Club that is just down the street to expand the activities and opportunities that our students have access to.
