2017 Winners for Scholarship Essay Contest

The 10th Annual International Union and Painters & Allied Trades District Council No. 7 Scholarship Essay Contest was judged by the Honorable Kristy Yang, Circuit Court Judge, Branch 47. Many thanks go out to Judge Yang for volunteering her time and efforts. The awards were presented at the on Monday, August 14, 2017.

Applications for the contest are accepted annually between April 1st and June 30th of each year. The applicant submits a written doubled spaced 750 to 1,000 word essay on the chosen topic and must be a dependent child of an IUPAT DC 7 member in “good standing". All applicants must show proof of acceptance at a certified college, university, vocational, trade school, or other accredited institute of higher learning before any monetary prize is awarded. This year's recipients received cash prizes ranging from $1,500 to $3,000.

The subject of the essay was "The Role of Politics in Unions".

The Winners

  1. Madeline Kendal took first prize and earned a $3,000 scholarship for UW Madison. Read her essay.
  2. Andrew Pecunia took second prize and earned a $1,500 scholarship for Marquette University. Read his essay.
  3. Katelynn Lambert took third prize and also earned a $1,500 scholarship for UW Madison. Read her essay.
